more information on Sir Harry Lauder and his songs. by Harry Lauder Excuse me for intruding, but my name is John Mackie; My heart is in the Heilan's and my native place is Skye. Altho' some handsome fellows in the clan Mackie we've got. The ladies all declare that I'm the handsomest of the lot. "Oh my, Mister John Mackie! You're the cockle of my heart and apple of my eye, You fairly take my fancy ev'ry time you pass me by For you're the nicest chap that ev'er cross'd the border. When I came up to London first I did create a stir; People took me for a duke, or at least a Sir. All the hi-cros-stock-ricy, 'twas me they did adore, And daily I was getting invitations by the score. I got a special grand invite to go and see the King; He shook my hand and asked me to dance a Hielan' Fling. Ev'ry time I jumped aroon' the King he "Hooched!" with glee, But when the Queen came on the scene, she shouted out to me- Yes, I was invited to a feast by the Lord Mayor and the Lady Lord Mayor, and I was so much astonished as the grandeur ther that I nearly fell down through the bottom of my kilt. And when I recovered there were about twenty-two of the nicest lookin' ladies I ever saw, standing round me with a bottle o' whisky in each hand, singing at the top of their voices. "Oh my, Mister John Mackie! You're the cockle of my heart and apple of my eye, You fairly take my fancy ev'ry time you pass me by For you're the nicest chap that ev'er cross'd the border. |
